Nesakkaram-Seeds Feeds the Unfed
Br. Arun Nattalil
Covid -19 has affected the entire world and we are not spared either! The Indian economy, which was already experiencing a sharp slump, was hit hard by the pandemic. The March 24 lockdown, which lasted until at least May 31 and even beyond (when it was followed by local restrictive measures) halted the activity of factories and transport, putting more than 121 million people (including 91 million daily wage labourers in the informal sector and the youth with over 4 million unemployed being below the age of 30) out of work in as single month, according to the Centre for Monitoring the Indian Economy.
This pandemic is not just a socio-economic crisis, it is also a humanitarian crisis. The uncertain future that lies ahead of us can make us sometimes panicky. One of the ways to come out from this kind of situation is to seek help from God and to approach those who have an eye to see the poor. God’s will is that we should love everyone, seeing Him in our neighbour. Since every human being is the child of God and the dwelling place of the Spirit of God, we are actually giving expression to our love of God by loving our neighbour as Jesus loves him or her. This means, we need to help, support, encourage and pray for everyone without discrimination based on color, race, gender, age, wealth, personal attractiveness, or social status.
Nesakkaram seeds extended its caring and supporting hands to the needy by giving 10 kgs of rice each to 287 poor families in 11 slums in Chennai. It was an enriching experience for me to distribute the rice-kits. With the timely help from Nesakkaram, all those families which had no money to sustain their daily living were benefited from our service.
In these slums, many people have painstakingly built and sustained their livelihoods around multiple forms of daily work. The pandemic has brought their life under severe crisis. Moreover, they did not have food to eat because of lack of any jobs. After serving the rice-kit to them, to see the joy on their face encouraged us further to continue to reach out to many others.
I feel that God never wastes anything. He would not give us abilities, interests, talents, gifts, personality, and life experiences unless He intended to use them for His glory. By identifying and understanding these factors, one can discover God’s will for one’s life. Nesakkaram is doing a great service to the society by distributing the rice-kits through the support of our benefactors, donors and well-wishers. We thank our benefactors, donors and well-wishers wholeheartedly for their generosity.
